Goldenrod Restaurant and Drive-in: NH Fifties Food

May 8th, 2003 · 6 Comments

Goldenrod Restaurant and Drive-in
1681 Candia Road
Manchester, NH
Exit 6 (Hanover St.) from Rte I-93
603-623-9469

Picnic tables outside. Lots of pickup trucks. The menu includes fried smelt, chicken croquettes, grape nut ice cream. If you sit inside, there is a smoking section.

Yes! Yes! In a brand-new world where people confess to the most embarrassing stuff–yes! I confess! I love the Goldenrod.

I love the fried shrimp and belly-clam plate, half and half, with melted butter, red spicy sauce, tartar sauce, salllllty french fries. . I love sitting here with so many NH people, enjoying ourselves, eating yummy high-calorie foods for not much money.

Does God exist? Brilliant philosophers argue either side, and I can’t understand a word they say. My two arguments for a loving God are simple, based on food:

  1. Strawberry-rhubarb pie is possible only because strawberries and rhubarb come in season together.
  2. The Goldenrod Restaurant and Drive-in in Manchester, NH still exists.

(John Fladd at HippoPress.com also gives Goldenrod a super-top rating.)

I have to fess up and admit that I prefer the Tilton Diner and the old Capital City Diner (same owner). Poodle skirts, chrome streamline fixtures, and malted beverages… ahh…can you feel the nostalgia? There used to be a lot of caricatures of the resturant employees bordering the vinyl ceiling cornice; they were drawn by a great artist who frequents the Balsam’s Grand Resort Hotel. I’ve forgotten his name…Larry something???

I also love the Tilton and Capital City Diners! I got some great tiltin’ coffee cup earrings at the former. If you come back to NH this summer, let’s go get some wicked diner food together!

I’m afraid I may have to take you up on that!
I leave next Thursday…driving a Jaguar from Tucson to New London.

Many summers I drove from Santa Barbara, CA to Manchester, NH, my old hometown. Fun stuff en route: Meramec Caverns just west of St. Louis, MO, with guides who sound like Yogi Bear, wonderful patriotic Kate Smith finale. Historical museum in Terre Haute, IN. More caverns in PA, whose name I forget. Have a great trip!

I think you might mean Lost River Caverns in PA. I love Santa Barbara. In 2001, I attended an ISI Publisher’s convention there and visited Ronald Reagan’s ranch, Rancho del Cielo.
