I remember my mom, age 80, telling me, “I look in the mirror and I think, who’s that old woman?”
I don’t know what my mom’s “real” image really looked like. I do know the person who lives behind my eyes–she’s still somewhere in between 10 and 13. She’s somebody who lives happily in her body, but expects you mostly care about her ideas and her jokes.
Yep, that’s me up in that apple tree.
And how about you? What do you really look like, inside your head? Give me a comment and post a link to “your” picture, okay?

Hi Betsy, I’m not sure which one is the real me, but I’m here at my mom’s so maybe I can find one. “;->”

I’ve been thinking about this very thing recently. I have a picture of me holding latest grandson. You can him at my site. You will not see me in the picture. The exterior does not match the interior! I think I must be a senior in high school although the hormones dont seem to rage as often now thought they still do. I’m still young but with a much better sense of humor.

Lovely shoulders, sez the dirty old man. She can play in my orchard anytime.
The real me is this guy in his early or mid-twenties, looking out from behind the bars of an aging integument.
There might be a picture around here someplace… I’ll let you know.

I was always the photographer so pictures of me are rare, but my self image is about 18 wearing a cap, but with the beard I didn’t grow for 5 more years.
When I look in the shaving mirror I always wonder why my dad is looking back at me.

I know the picture I’d like to see. Seems to be fading away so I have it on the home page of my weblog to remind me.

What a great post! I’ve just been thinking about this very same thing, having just turned 30 a couple of months ago. Inside my head, I think I still feel like a teenager, just trying to get out and live on my own for the first time. I don’t feel like I’ve already lived through three decades, but people assure me I’m supposed to be all grown up.
Poppycock! I hope we can all remain kids inside, no matter what the outside looks like.

Thanks for the great post, Betsy. I’ve thought of myself as being about 30 since elementary school… photos and more comments are here.

I see from your pix that I have a lot of cute guys reading my blog! Not that looks are the most important thing, of course….
